【Arare Nanbugata Tetsubin】

Out of the many Tetsubin shapes, one is a unique and popular shape is called "Nanbugata" which was originally created in the Nanbu area which used to span Southern Aomori and Nothern Iwate.

Since Nanbutetsubin originated from "Chagama (tea pot for tea ceremony)", it was devised by making a Chagama smaller and attaching a spout and a handle on it, in the middle of the Edo period.

There are a lot of different types of tetsubin whose designs and shapes are modern, inspired by animals, plants and things that are found in the local environment. However, previously most tetsubin's designs and shapes followed the traditional of past Chagama.

People started innovating their tetsubin design from the Meiji period to the Taisho period. Around that time, the Nanbugata shape was created by artisans in the Nanbu area. (The Nanbugata tetsubin has a skirt-like design on its body and the hem is always chipped a little.)

When the Nanbugata tetsubin was created, there were many exhibitions of artisan work such as the National exhibition, the Japan-British exhibition and the Taisho exhibition. Artisans competed each other, which helped them improve their skills. These events lead to many types of tetsubin being created around that time.

There are about 40 different shapes of tetsubin out there nowadays, most of them including the Nanbugata shape are made retaining, to some extent, the traditional shape.
