みなさんは、鉄瓶作りではどのような道具が使われているか、ご存知でしょうか？今回は鉄瓶製作で使われる道具について、その一部をご紹介したいと思います。
下の写真は漆で鉄瓶に着色をしている様子です。手に持っている小さいほうきのようなものは、「くごぼうき」と呼ばれ、着色をする際に使われる道具です。

鉄瓶製作において手作りを強みとしている当工房ですが、実はこちらのくごぼうきも全て職人の手作りで出来ています。どこから手作りかと言うと、「くご」という植物を刈り取るところから始まります。
年に一度、職人全員で工房近隣の湿地帯へ行き、くごぼうきに使う「くご」を刈り取りに行きます。そしてその際には、鉄瓶の型作りや文様付けに必要な川砂や石も一緒に採取してきます。

刈り取った「くご」は、乾燥させ、下の写真のようにまとめて工房に吊るしておきます。

昔から地のものを使って行われてきた鉄瓶製作ですが、職人が使う道具にも伝統的な製作方法は受け継がれています。手作り、そして地元の自然のものを取り入れている、というこだわりを少しでも感じ取っていただけたら嬉しいです。
岩手は古くから鉄の産地として知られていますが、近くに豊かな自然があることも南部鉄器が盛んになった理由の１つと言われています。地元の資源を大切にしながらも、可能な限り地のものを使った、環境に負荷の少ない鉄瓶作りを今後も行っていきたいと思います。

【Artisan's Tools】
Do you know what kinds of tools are used for tetsubin making? I would like to introduce one of tools that we use for tetsubin making here today.
The picture below is where artisan is applying Urushi lacquer on an iron kettle. The broom-like-tool in hand is called "Kugo Houki", it is used for applying coloring.

As handmade tetsubin is our strength point, the Kugo Houki is also made by our artisans. In fact, the process starts from where we go to a wetland nearby our studio to collect the Kugo.
Once a year, all our artisans go to a wetland to collect the Kugo, we also collect river sand and stones that are used for making tetsubin molds.

After been collected, they are dried, and then be made like broom and be kept at the studio.

The local materials have been used for tetsubin making since long time ago, as well as the traditional way of making tools has been handed down. We would be happy that you could find that we are particular about using local materials for tetsubin making.
Iwate is known as having a rich source of iron from the past, and furthermore, surrounding by abundant nature is also one of a reason that tetsubin making thrived in Iwate. We will be creating iron kettles by using local materials as much as possible not to burden the environment, as well as we continue to care our mother nature.
