　雪の結晶をモチーフにしたこちらの鉄瓶は、当工房代表、田山和康が研究を重ねて描いた10~12種類の異なる雪の結晶(雪花紋)が施されています。雪花紋は、古くから着物や浮世絵などにも用いられてきた伝統的な文様ですが、こちらの鉄瓶に描かれている雪花紋は、凹凸のある雪の結晶そのままの形を鉄瓶に表せないか、と思考を凝らして考えられた、和康ならではの文様となっています。


　これらの文様は、日本初の雪の結晶図鑑とも言われる、幕末に編纂された「雪華図説」や雪の結晶の標本をまとめた「snowflakes」、そして和康自身が生活の中で見て感じ、観察したものを基にデザインされました。

【雪花紋に描かれている12種類の文様】

　大中小の3サイズありますが、実は大中と小では描かれている雪花紋の数と形が異なります。大中はその広い面を活かして大きく華やかに描かれていますが、小は小ぶりな文様で、その数も大中と比べて多く、そして可愛らしく描かれています。


　また、大中は凹凸のはっきりした立体的でより実物に忠実な文様であるのに対し、小は平面的でシンプルな文様が描かれています。以下の写真でその違いをご覧下さい。

　小の鉄瓶、特に砂鉄の雪花紋布団形鉄瓶には、和康自身が生活の中で見て感じた美しい雪景色が表現されています。


　ある冬の早朝に、和康は庭のクロマツに雪が積もり、朝日でキラキラと光る光景を目にしました。岩手県は本州一寒いと言われる寒冷地で、零度を下回る厳しい寒さの早朝には、雪の結晶が溶けることなくそのままの形で朝日に反射し、キラキラと光って見えることがあります。


　その時目にした雪の結晶と雪を被ったクロマツの美しい雪景色をどうにか鉄瓶に表すことができないか、と思いを巡らせ、製作したのが砂鉄の雪花紋布団形鉄瓶の小でした。こちらの鉄瓶のつまみ部分が松かさの形をしているのは、この時に見たクロマツが由来になっています。


　温暖化の影響で今ではそのような光景を目にする機会はほとんど無くなりましたが、こちらの鉄瓶を眺めながら、北国の厳しくも美しい雪景色を思い浮かべてみてはいかがでしょうか。

　雪花紋布団形鉄瓶の文様は、十数本ものヘラを使い分けて、一線一線、一点一点、文様を施しています。表すことが難しい線があるときには、自分で新たにヘラを作ることもあります。そうすることでより効率的に文様付けが行えるよう、日々工夫をしながら製作に向き合っています。

*Sekkamon is a pattern of snowflakes in Japanese. It is a traditional pattern that has been used for several kinds of traditional crafts such as Ukiyoe and Kimono from long time ago.



　On a surface of the Sekkamon Futongata Tetsubin, 10 to 12 different patterns of snowflakes that Kazuyasu Tayama created based on his study are drawn. Kazuyasu had been thinking hard if he could create the snowflakes as they are and look three-dimentional. Because of his creativity and his own study, his Sekkamon is unique to him.


　He studied Sekkamon with these two books. The one is called "雪華図説(Sekka Zusetsu)" which is the first snowflake visual dictionary in Japan, completed in the end of the Edo period, the other is called "snowflakes" which is a snowflake specimen.
　 In addition, his Sekkamon is creatd based on his observation, experience and inspiration in his daily life.

【12 different kinds of Sekkamon patterns】

　 There are three sizes, L, M, S in the Sekkamon Futongata Tetsubin. Interestingly, the design and the number of the Sekkamon are different between L/M and S. To make use of the wide surface, the Sekkamon is drawn widely, gorgeously and three-dimensionally on its surface of L and M, while it is drawn smaller, cutely, simply and more patterns on its surface of S. 　As for a Sekkamon tetsubin S size, especially a Sand Iron one, it expresses that a beautiful winter scenery that Kazuyasu saw and felt in his everyday life.

　One day in the early morning in winter, Kazuyasu saw a shiny scenery where black pine tree was covered with snow and reflected by morning sunshine. It is said that Iwate prefecture is the coldest area in main island in Japan, therefore, you could see snowflakes are shining by sunshine while keeping its form on a cold day when the temperature falls below the freezing point.


　After he saw the scenery, he started thinking if he could create the beautiful winter scenery into tetsubin, and then "the Sand Iron Sekkamon Futongata Tetsubin S size" was created because of that reason. A pinecorn shaped knob of the tetsubin comes from that story.


　Although, we can hardly see such a beautiful winter scenery due to the global warming nowadays, it is a good way to imagine the severly cold but beautiful snow scenery while looking at the tetsubin.

　Kazuyasu uses several different tools for Sekkamon Futongata Tetsugin. Lines and dots are drawn one by one with those tools. When he finds difficult lines or dots to draw, he even makes new tools by himself. He has been working on tetsubin making everyday while trying to discover more efficient way.
